Welsh Schools Football Under 18s Semi-Final
Whitchurch High School went into the game knowing that a win would put them into the Final of the Wales Schools u18 competition. The squad knew that in the latter stages of the competition there would be no easy game.
Whitchurch started the game well creating chances throughout the first half, but against the run of play Olchfa were able to take a 1-0 lead and score a second on the stroke of half time. Work ethic was crucial if Whitchurch were to win the game, after going 2-0 heads were dropping and things didn’t look bright. However, Whitchurch battled hard, and when Ben Carey’s long range effort was fumbled into the goal by the keeper, Whitchurch were back in it at 2-1.
The talk about work ethic at half time was paying off as Whitchurch continued to battle hard and eventually found a breakthrough in the 90th minute when Andrew Jenkins beat two players and trickled the ball past the goalkeeper and put the game into extra time.
Whitchurch were determined to kill the game off, and when Olchfa asked to only play 10 minutes instead of 15 minutes each half in extra time, Whitchurch declined, and 30 minutes of extra time began. Whitchurch had much higher fitness levels and seemed a lot more determined to win the game, and when Josh Beddis made the score 3-2, Whitchurch took complete control and were able to kill off their opponents with Gareth Woodman and Andrew Jenkins adding 2 more for the home side.
The final whistle blew meaning Whitchurch had made the Welsh Cup final on May 14th. It’s the first time that the school have made the final, and it would be a fantastic achievement for the players and the school if Whitchurch were to bring home the cup as champions.
