Welsh Baccalaureate Progress Day

346 year 10 pupils took part in our inaugural Welsh Baccalaureate Progress day on Thursday 11th November, with the day proving to be a huge success.

Pupils were seen in groups of three by senior staff members within the school where they had the opportunity to discuss their progress with their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification and to seek advice. The main focus of the day however was to provide support and advice to pupils in order to help them identify two areas in which they want to improve in year 10. When these areas were identified staff involved helped pupils to set specific and meaningful targets and develop action plans to help them to improve in their selected areas.

This process provides a dual benefit to pupils as it will also allow pupils to work towards achieving their IOLP key skill at level 2, (pupils need to achieve 2 key skills at level 2 and two at level 1 to achieve their intermediate WBQ diploma).

A large number of pupils reported that they found their mentor slot during the day extremely useful and allowed them to take more ownership and control of their learning.

“By breaking my targets down into small manageable steps I can now see how to improve the quality of the presentations that I produce in Psychology”. “ By developing an action plan to help meet my target to improve the quality of my revision for Science modular exams I can really see what I need to do to improve the way that I revise.”

Pupils will be working towards achieving their targets over the coming months and will be gathering evidence to prove that they have met each of the steps that they have highlighted in their action plans. Their progress will be reviewed and additional support will be provided by their WBQ mentor in WBQ sessions held each morning during tutor periods, with one mentor being attached to each year 10 form.

Their second WBQ progress day will be on the 16 th June 2011.
