National Rowing Champions
On Friday December 3rd 2010 Whitchurch High School took part in the annual Welsh Schools Indoor Rowing Championships held at Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre.
This tournament is open to all secondary schools nationwide for pupils between the ages of 11 – 18yrs old. This year 21 high schools from England and Wales took part. Whitchurch High School has come 3rd for the last 3 years with Colmers High School from Birmingham winning the last 2 events. It went down to the last race with 1 point between Whitchurch and Colmers, (Colmers in the lead). Whitchurch Yr 11 boys relay team gained a bronze taking the scores level, but then the Yr 11 girls’ team won Gold in their relay race and cementing Whitchurchs victory. Mr Michael Williams, the rowing coach of the victors said, “We have been trying for 3 years to bring this trophy back to Wales. With hard work in training and true grit on the day, I am so very proud of all the pupils that took part. I am absolutely overwhelmed.”
Colmers finished joint second along with Dyffryn Taf School of Whitland Carmarthenshire.
