Maths Enrichment Day

Have you ever made a football out of hexagons and pentagons? …Well neither had any of our students until Angela Gould came to Whitchurch High to deliver a Mathematics enrichment session to some of our year 8, 9 10 and 12 students.

The experience proved to be hugely enjoyable for all the pupils involved as they embarked on a range of mathematical challenges. The pupils completed many paper folding exercises designed to develop their knowledge of shape, which culminated in teams building footballs out of pentagons and hexagons – a task that demanded good team work.

The pupils then worked in pairs to complete a very challenging maths trail which got everyone thinking – even the teachers!  Year 10 found themselves creating a giant tetrahedron (3-D shape with 4 equilateral triangle faces), and the more brave participants sat inside as it was sellotaped up!

Year 12 students were also set challenging geometrical problems – some of them are still talking about it, as well as being shown how to create a family of tetrahedra from 2 sheets of A4 paper.

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all, students and teachers alike!
