Live and Cooking

On Tuesday 18th January, we were fortunate enough to be the first school in Cardiff to have a whole day of demonstrations provided by Cardiff County Catering.

The Live and Cooking team showed almost 500 of our KS3 pupils how to make up a chicken jambalaya, in 15 minutes. They explained to pupils how this was less than the time spent waiting for a convenience meal to cook in the oven. The jambalaya samples were tasted by many pupils who thoroughly enjoyed the flavours, and lead to over 30 portions being sold on the first day it was available in the school canteen.

A volunteer from each session was then given the challenge to make a pot noodle faster than the chef could prepare a chicken noodle soup. In each of the 5 sessions, the chef was finished before the pot noodle was ready to eat. Again, this dish went down well with the pupils, who were keen to take home the recipe cards for jambalaya and the soup.

It was a fantastic opportunity for many of our pupils and we hope that another session will be organised to show even more pupils how healthy dishes can be prepared quickly and taste great.
