Köln Christmas Markets

December 2010 saw 45 students from lower school going ‘Deutsch’ in a short trip to the city of Cologne, led by the MFL team.

After spending a fairly sleepless night on the coach, the fun soon begun!  Our first stop was the famous “Phatasialand” theme park.  Pupils enjoyed not only the break-neck speeds of the roller coasters, but also the opportunity to order some traditional German food, before taking the chance to go ice skating.
The evening was spent around the well known Cologne Cathedral, again trying the German traditions and soaking up the fabulous German Christmas market atmosphere.

Our second day was chocolate filled, with our first stop being the Lindt Chocolate museum.  I think the shop took all our Euros that day.  Coming away from there, there was barely enough room for the pupils once the chocolate had been loaded onto the coach!
We continued by travelling to Monschau, experiencing a second Christmas market with snow falling all day, which certainly added to the atmosphere.  Pupils were able to buy Christmas gifts, food and souvenirs, all the while practising their German!
We finished our evening at a beautiful restaurant on the market square in Monschau.  We ate a typical two course German meal, before making our way back through the snow and to the coach.

A fabulous time was had by everyone! We can’t wait for the next time.
