6th Form Visit Berlin
In October 2010, 25 Year 12 and 13 AS, A2 and IB students of German, accompanied by Frau Carter and Mr Morgan spent an action-packed six days in Germany’s capital city.
Everyone soon got used to Frau Carter’s brisk pace and the jam-packed programme of events. We saw a huge amount of fascinating things in this incredibly vibrant city: a 5 hour long bike tour visiting the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, site of Hitler’s bunker, Holocaust Memorial, the remains of the Berlin Wall etc. Feeling ready for more, we then had a second day’s cycling in Potsdam – great stuff.
We visited the Holocaust Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and also had a guided tour behind the scenes at the Olympiastadion including the changing rooms from the World Cup 2006 and history from the 1936 Nazi Olympics.
Then on to the ‘DDR Museum’ a fascinating little hands on museum dedicated to life in the former East Germany from 1949 – 1989. Getting to sit in a ‘Trabi’, the iconic East German car, was a hit with all! The most sobering and, possibly most fascinating visit, was to the East German Secret Police’s (the Stasi) former prison at Hohenschoenhausen
Retail therapy was not forgotten. There was free time in the heart of the former West Berlin and several hours spent shopping in Germany’s longest shopping street. Some even visited the famous Berlin Zoo! Then our final night rendezvous at Mutter Hoppe’s restaurant for our fabulous suckling pig banquet.
A fabulous time was had by all. Alles klar?? Wunderbar!
