White Water Rafting at CIWW

On Wednesday 30th June 2010, the day after Michael Good NASA astronaut splashed down in Whitchurch, the school was invited to the Cardiff International White Water  (CIWW). The reason was that our visit heralded the first Major Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week event to be held in Wales. After the official opening with Denise Lewis OBE and Cllr Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, visitors had a chance to look around this magnificent facility but more importantly our students had a go! They had a great time.

The Cardiff International White Water Centre (CIWW) is only one of three in the UK and has a higher specification than the one that will be used in the 2012 Olympics. CIWW is situated at International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay and conveniently positioned on the Bay Edge walkway. It is adjacent to the New Cardiff International Pool.

Whitchurch High School was the only secondary school in the morning to be invited to send 30 year eight pupils along with our two 5x60 officers. Eglwys Newydd represented the primary cluster of schools. We were very proud that Nathan Williams and Stephanie Harris our Sports Wales Young Ambassadors took a starring role and met the distinguished guests throughout the day which included Huw Jones-Williams (WHS Headteacher), Molly Chatters (Headteacher Eglwys Newydd), Gareth Daniel (WHS Assistant Head Teacher), Hannah Mawson and Jamie Elson (WHS 5x60 officers) All staff and pupils agreed that the CIWW is an outstanding asset to Cardiff’s portfolio of sporting facilities, which must now rival any city in the UK.
