Whitchurch Wasps come 3rd at Nationals

 

 

On the 4th of December 2009, the Whitchurch Wasps Rowing Club entered the Welsh Schools Indoor Rowing Championships. There were a record number of schools that attended from all over Britain. This year a record 69 pupils went to compete from Whitchurch and were by far the biggest group there.

The event was split into individual racing in the morning and team relays in the afternoon. Here are the results from the Welsh Schools Indoor Rowing Championships.

Individual Races.

Carys Hill 7G - Bronze in the individual. This was a 2min race with the longest distance winning.

Claudia Price 8P - Silver in the 3 minute individual. Claudia also won the silver in her event last year.

Carys Lowe 9G - Gold in the 4 minutes individual. Carys led right from the start and held on to win her gold.

Angharad Jones 9G – Silver in the 4 minutes individual. Making it a one, two win for Whitchurch.

Lewis George 11W - Bronze in the individual. Lewis did a time of 7m:17.5s for a distance of 2000m.

Team relay events.

A team consist of 4 members each taking it in turns to race a distance of 2000m in the fastest time. The results were:

Yr 7 boys - Silver - with a time of 8:10.4. In the team were:

Yr 8 Boys - Silver.- with a time of 7:12.6. In the team were:

Yr 8 Girls – Silver.- with a time of 8:07.6. In the team were:
Claudia Price 8P
Naomi Davies 8P
Eve Ogden 8P
Sophie Hill 8B

Yr 9 Girls – Gold for the A team and Silver for the B team. Making it another one, two win for the Yr 9 girls. The A team did a time of 7:41.6. Beating all of the Yr 10 girls teams and all but 2 of the Yr 11 girls teams! Amazing!

Claudia Price 8P. (Making Claudia a TRIPLE Silver medallist!!!)
Naomi Davies 8P. (Making Naomi a Double Silver medallist.)

Yr 10 Boys – Bronze - with a time of 6:45.3. In the team were:

Jack Maguire 10J
Ben Mears 10M.  (A great finish by Ben taking the team into a podium position.)

Yr 11 Girls – Bronze - with a time of 8:14.6. In the team were:
Lauren Burely 11P
Rosie Cumines 11J
Mariska Jones 11J
Sarah Bishop 11J
And a lot of help from Zoe John 11J

Overall, Whitchurch took the 3rd place position for the whole school competition. Whitchurch beat all the other schools in Cardiff. 2nd place went to Ysgol Duffryn Taf and 1st place went to Colmers School and Sports College from Birmingham.

Mr M Williams is now setting up a new indoor rowing competition. It is called the Cardiff Schools Indoor Rowing Derby. An event for all the local schools in Cardiff to compete against each other. It will be held in the school on Friday the 19th of March.
