Whitchurch First XV clinch Welsh Schools Plate Cup

Whitchurch met St David’s College Cardiff at UWIC to contest this years Welsh Schools Rugby Union Plate Cup final. St. David’s applied the early pressure and were rewarded when centre Paul King kicked a penalty for a 3 point lead. This was short lived however as Centre Alex Cooke dropped a goal at the other end to even the scores. The mobile but smaller Whitchurch pack gave a good account of themselves for the rest of this half and the pressure finally turned into points as a quick tapped penalty was skilfully moved along the line to allow Alex Cooke to cross for a try that full back Elliot Jones converted for a 10-3 half time lead.

Whitchurch started the second half strongly and a great break by outside half  Alex Kerr was stopped just short of the line but with St. Davids killing the ball at the breakdown Elliot Jones stepped up to add a further penalty. Whitchurch now had their best spell of the match and intense pressure again led to a penalty that Elliot converted into a further 3 points. Shortly after this Jamie D’Abreu turned over possession and quick hands in the backs allowed Paul Myers to go over in the corner and with Elliot Jones kicking a superb conversion to give us a 23-3 lead.

In fairness to St. Davids they upped their game and used their bigger pack of forwards in a succession of driving mauls against our tiring pack. This resulted in a remarkable hat trick of tries for prop Joe Tomlinson and with Paul King converting 2 of these the game ended in a nail biting 23-22 victory for Whitchurch.

The boys should all be congratulated for a team effort that added further silverware to the trophy cabinet this year following the early season triumph in the King Edwards South Coast Tournament in the Autumn much to the delight of Coaches Mr Steve Williams and Mr Ian McIntyre.
