This year was another fantastic success for our senior sports men and women again winning National titles and it again culminated in our annual senior sports dinner. This year a large number of pupils attended and it was excellent to be able to welcome Mr Huw Jones Williams our headmaster, other members of the senior management team and the staff who helped with teams throughout the year to the evening.
The guest speaker this year was very special since it was Sam Warburton a Whitchurch High School old boy who only a few years earlier had attended the dinner as a pupil and is now a current Welsh international and a Cardiff Blues player who has his sights on the Welsh tour of New Zealand and the World cup next year.
Sam decided to do a question and answer session with the pupils and the questions came thick and fast form both students and staff about the pressure of playing for Wales and the sacrifices he has to do to maintain the standard.
Pupils asked what its like to be a professional sportsman who gets the chance to travel the world and experience different cultures and he was also quizzed about the chances of Wales in the next world cup. Wales to win! That will do for me!
Excellent speeches were made by all our senior captains again showing the great relationship between the staff and the pupils. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the staff to say thank you for all the kind gifts presented by the teams on the night.
The main prizes for Players Player of the year for 2010 were awarded to the following students:
Netball: Clarice Watkinson
Hockey: Rhiannon Lavin
Rugby: Dean Reynolds
Football: Dean Reynolds
This was the first year that I can remember when one pupil won both awards however I must say that the awards to Dean were well deserved.
International Honours were awarded to the following sportsmen and women:
Girls Cricket – Ella Jackson
Under 16 Hockey- Ella Jackson
U 18 Girls Hockey – Rhianon Lavin
Boys Hockey – Patrick Mc Dowell and Alun Welsh
At the end of the evening it was with great pleasure that the school accepted Sam’s 3rd International shirt that he wanted to donate to the school. The shirt has been framed by the school and will take pride of place in the Upper school sports hall.
Many thanks for your kind gesture Sam.
I would like to thank all the pupils and staff who help and take the teams for all their hard work over the year and the success and positive publicity you bring to the school.
The department would like to take the opportunity to thank the Senior Management at the school for their continued support for the department and the pupils enabling the school to further develop its sporting reputation.
Mr Morris
