Day 4
Sunday promised to be the most exciting day yet on our South African visit with a trip to Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain, so called because of the its extremely wide, flat peak. Luckily for the Whitchurch team the day was crystal clear without any of the woolly clouds that can obscure the breath-taking views of Cape Town far below on Table Bay. The most exhilarating part of the visit was the ride in the cable car. Even Mr Coombes was taken aback by the sheer scale of the whole thing and tried to explain the complexity of the physics involved, but to no avail!
The vista from the top of Table Mountain is indescribable but I’ll try to give an impression. The great metropolis looks like a toy model town and only the biggest tankers can be spotted in Table Bay, the yachts and other ships are simply too small to be seen. The vast Atlantic, burnished by the golden sun, seems to extend into infinity like some tract of outer space; fathomless and beyond measure. We saw plants and animals only to be found in the Cape area such as the Fynbos plant and the guinea-pig like Rock Dassi. All in all a fantastic experience and something we will never forget.
