Day 10
It was yet another early start as the group gathered together in sweltering conditions on the Braak in Stellenbosch. The temperature that morning at 11.00am was 34oC. Stellenbosch is an old settlers’ town that very much retains the air of a sleepy seventeenth century colony with many white-washed churches with thatched roofs.
The Whitchurch group wandered around the market stalls perusing the many objects of African art on offer. Later on that day we were driven out to Mr Matthewson’s place in neighbouring Franschoek where the heat grew ever more intense.
Franschoek is nestled in the vine covered valleys of the Franschhoek mountain-range and is famous for its wines. We had a fantastic evening meeting new people and also talking to old colleagues such as Mr Rob Davies (Ex-Head of Sixth Form). Jac and Gareth spent most of the evening in the pool and enjoying the plentiful amount of burgers on offer.
Many stayed until 10.00pm, but Mr Rees was whisked away to an outdoor theatre in Stellenbosch to see a performance by Emo Adams, a celebrated figure in South African music.
