Engineering Team Challenge

Two lucky groups of year 9 pupils accompanied Mr. Mulford to the University of Glamorgan to enter the annual Engineering Team Challenge.  This year the teams were challenged to design and make a bridge with limited resources, to a support a can of pop along its’ entire length, then it was tested to destruction to establish which bridge would support the heaviest weight.  These factors were combined with the cost effectiveness of the design, which each team had to calculate. Whitchurch pupils’ knowledge of studying structure helped them to excel this year.

A variety of creative and innovative ideas varied from the ‘spider web design’, truss inspired ‘cantilever design’ to classic ‘suspension bridge’ designs were made on both days and congratulations were extended to all participants.

For the first time ever 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places were secured on both days.  The winners on the first day were; Feyisara Odumunga, Sarah Blackenship, and Angharad Jones.  The second day winners were Roy Belcher, Jack Walkey & Sam Hopkins, and Giacomo Raffiell.

It was a fun and fantastic experience for all the pupils who attended, and it was good to see that we have some budding engineers in the making.  We would like to personally thank Mr Alan Perry for co-ordinating the whole event and wish him the best of luck at his second attempt at retiring.
