Community Focused Schools Recognition Day

Whitchurch is a school that has always been at the heart of the community it serves. Accordingly, since its introduction, we have been part of the Community Focused Schools (CFS) network in Cardiff. Community Focused Schools is an initiative funded by the Welsh Assembly to increasingly develop the links between schools and communities to enhance learning for all.

On Friday, 14 May, Whitchurch High presented at the Cardiff CFS Recognition Day held at the Cardiff City Stadium.  This involved a display of the multitude of community related initiatives the school is involved in, a presentation and outline of some of those activities given by Gareth Daniel and, most importantly, a display of contemporary dance given by the Youth Dance group who are trained by one of our most important partners, Rubicon Dance.

Their performance was of an extremely high standard and appreciated by the large audience. Thanks must also go to their dance tutor, Sharon Teear, an alumni of Whitchurch High.

Others in attendance at the event were Huw Jones-Williams (Headteacher), Sian Hopkins (Vice-Chair of Governors), Jackie Allen (Support Centre), Lucy Arthur (Pastoral Support, Year 10), Geoff Cresswell (Head of Hawthorn Primary) and Gareth Evans, Sue Leat, Nicola Callen and Valerie Cole (all of Whitchurch Action for Youth).

At the end of the ceremony the school was presented with a certificate in recognition of our role in developing community links via the Community Focused Schools initiative.

The dance group consisted of students ranging from Year 7 to Year 10, namely:

Year 7 - Katie Elliot, Stacey Baird, Kayleigh Davies-Lewis, Ezra O’Connor, Kirsten Steere and Morgan Dineen.

Year 8 - Aemilia Claydon, Aoife Murphy, Kate Vella, Roshni Akthar, Olivia Regan and Eve Ogden.

Year 9 - Steph Williams.

Year 10 - Erin Harris and Taylar-Jane Crook.
