Opening of New Catering Area

On Wednesday 3rd March we were delighted to welcome the Rt. Hon. Lord Mayor Of Cardiff, Councillor Brian Griffiths, and the Lady Mayoress, Val Griffiths, to formally open the new catering area in Upper School. The opening of the catering area was a combination of two projects.

One has been the refurbishment and complete rebuild of the old canteen area undertaken by Sue Eakers and the DSU. This has resulted in the complete transformation of a former dark and cramped area to a light and spacious area complemented by two modernised kitchen serving areas.

The other has been the adjacent brand new build of a 150 seating area undertaken by Steve Williams and WHS in-house estates team. This now provides a warm, welcoming and extensive catering seating area, but which also lends itself to being an open multi-use area suitable for multi function activities.

We welcomed a distinguished number of guests including governors, past and present colleagues, representatives of the LEA, contractors, the school council and the SNAG (School Nutrition and Action Group). There was a selection of artwork on display and music was provided by:

String Ensembles: Elizabeth Worby, Morven Graham, Melanie Lewis, Imogen Lee (Violins) , Sophie Nash, Rhona Graham (Cellos) . Solos performed by Jack Welch (Flute), Morven Graham (Violin) . Chamber Choir (featuring George Curnow as soloist in Food, Glorious Food from Oliver) directed by Mrs Thorne . Solos performed by Sarah Gilford and Giorgia Warsama.

The SNAG group helped with serving refreshments to the guests on arrival, including the muffins they had baked which were enjoyed by all.

Mrs Joyce Crandon, Chair of Governors welcomed all to the official opening. Ms Sue Eakers, Head of DSU, then spoke on behalf of the LEA and explained the importance of such a wonderful facility in providing quality eating areas and thanked all the contractors who had undertaken the refurbishment of the catering area. Mr Huw Jones –Williams, Head Teacher, followed thanking all the in-house estates team and those contractors who had been involved in the building of the new seating area. He also stressed that the impact of both schemes had extended simply beyond providing good eating facilities but allowing better opportunities for year ten and eleven pupils to socialise. The Lord Mayor then formally opened both schemes and stressed how impressed he was with them and the obvious quality.

Afterwards group photographs were taken and a toast given to the outstanding additional facility to continue to improve the learning environment of the school.
