Borneo Challenge
26 students, 3 teachers and 2 mountain leaders embarked on an adventure of a lifetime by traveling to Borneo for 4 weeks.
While in Borneo the students soon found out that this was far from a holiday in paradise where they had several tasks to endure:
Miki's Jungle Survival Camp
Deep in the Borneo rain forests the students had to camp under the stars and were taught jungle survival, the art of animal trapping and creating objects from bamboo. The highlight was surely catching frogs at night and then having them served to us for breakfast!
Mount Kinabalu
The students climbed the highest mountain in Asia and although a very arduous task was enjoyed by all. The students camped at 3200 meters and then were awoken at 2am to climb to the peak in time for sunrise.
On descent the students were lucky enough to use the Via Ferrata, a mountain route equipped with fixed cables, metal ladders and bridges.
MESCOT
Model Environment Sustainable Community Tourism Project is where the students volunteered in assisting the local community in the replanting of trees where they have been taken for their palm oil.
Everyone was hosted by a local family in the community and enjoyed its local culture and way of life.
Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
A days visit to the islands orangutan sanctuary was an exciting change to the students trip. They wandered around the sanctuary where students were able to witness the feeding of these great animals in their several acre sanctuary.
Salt Trail
This arduous 5 day trek across the island was surely a big challenge for the students. The salt trail was a trail originally created by natives of Sabah's interior who, for one hundred years, used to carry their jungle products across the Crocker Range to the coastal villages.
TAR Islands
On the final few days the students were allowed to rest on the exotic islands of TAR where they camped for two nights and enjoyed the tropical paradise scuba diving, snorkeling, sunbathing and reflecting on an adventure they will remember for the rest of their lives.
