“Yes to Foundation Status, it makes sense.” Whitchurch Governors

Consultation Period  Starts Monday 21st September   Ends Friday 13th November

As governors of Whitchurch High School we hope that our website section allows you a good point of reference where you can find out how we are responding to any Council proposals for the school.

We would ask members of the Press to telephone the school on 029 2062 9700 in relation to any enquires you may have from the governors, about any School Organisation Proposals for Whitchurch High School.

We very much want to come to an agreed partnership viewpoint with the Council on the investment needed to make the school suited for twenty-first century education. Whitchurch High School governors are mindful that any proposals must ensure an investment in the future of the school, and more importantly, that the current and future generations of Whitchurch students need to be provided with the very best educational opportunities.

Unfortunately the Council’s Executive committee on Thursday 2nd July means that the Council wishes to reduce the size of the school, which the governors are opposed to. Whitchurch governors are totally opposed to the proposals, which would prevent 600 pupils being able to attend Whitchurch High School and see 25 to 30 staff made redundant.  A proposed reduced sized Whitchurch High School (12 form entry to 9 form entry) would affect the breadth and quality of curriculum and extra curricular provision at the school, and may impact upon Post 16 education such as the viability of the International Baccalaureate.  Furthermore the proposals do nothing to tackle the 8,000 surplus places across the County, as there are no surplus places at Whitchurch High School.  The proposal is to keep the school on its present two sites but to sell half of the current lower school playing fields to generate capital receipts in all associated three primary school options and in addition part of the upper school playing fields in option two.  The total capital investment scheduled would be approximately £7.5 million.

The formation of the Whitchurch High Action Group (WHAG) is seen as a positive way in which parents, friends and all of the Whitchurch community can come together to help the governors  try to oppose the Council’s proposal and ensure that the school stays as a twelve form entry high school on two sites.  There will be a period of formal consultation in September to October 2009. The specific dates of this consultation period are unknown.
