Whitchurch High's Year 7 Girls Football team just missed out on becoming Welsh Champions in their very first season on May 2nd.

Following wins over Brynmawr, Cowbridge, and Porthcawl, they reached the final, held at Caernarvon Town Football Club, and played Sir Huw Owen School.

Despite being much the smaller side, the girls trailed only 1-0 at half time, with captain Jade Creed again outstanding, and then staged a magnificent recovery. Jodie Higgins helped turn the game as substitute, and Kathryn Salter was clearly Player of the Match in central midfield. She dominated the second half, breaking repeatedly down the left wing, and eventually helping striker and top scorer Emma Thomas to level the scores from close range.

Extra Time arrived before Whitchurch could clinch the victory. The additional ten minutes each way, in front of a crowd that was entirely supporting the opposition, proved just too much for the Whitchurch side, and they conceded three goals without reply. Keeper Gemma Codell recovered well to save three late chances to keep the final score to 4-1.

It was a superb performance by the team, but more importantly, they represented the school magnificently in a difficult atmosphere, and against a team that was physically much bigger. Observers congratulated coach Mr Brown, and mentioned how impressed they were with the silky skills the girls showed.

Well done to Gemma Codell, Becki Martin, Jade Creed, Ellie Goggs, Becky O'Connor, Kathryn Salter, Natalie Darcy, Emma Thomas, Jodie Higgins, Ella Jackson, Olivia Griffiths, Grace Burnett and Bethan Walters, and thanks to our travelling staff and support. We'll be back next year
