Modern Foreign Languages have never been more important and at Whitchurch we like to start early. The MFL department is a key player in the Welsh KS2 MFL Project, teaching French and German to Year 5 and 6 pupils in all our feeder primaries. (See ‘News’)

At KS3, French and German are equal first languages. All pupils study one or the other, with an option to study both for certain pupils. The language comes alive with our extremely popular annual trips to Calais/Boulogne and le Touquet in France, Aachen/Monschau in Germany and Zell am See in Austria.

GCSE is offered in French and German (Full Course) and pupils can practise their languages on study visits to France and Germany. Spanish at Key Stage 4 is offered in the form of the Certificate of Business Language Competence awarded by OCR.

In the Sixth Form we offer a wide range of languages and courses:

  • AS / A2 French and German

  • International Baccalaureate French, German and Spanish at Standard and Higher Levels

  • International Baccalaureate Spanish ‘ab initio’ at Standard Level and A1 Spanish where necessary

Sixth Formers take advantage of a superb range of visits run every year by the department to increase cultural awareness and improve linguistic competency. These include work experience and home stay visits in France and Germany, e-mail exchanges and visits to schools in France, Germany and Spain and cultural visits abroad.

The latest technology which includes our own interactive whiteboards enhances all our teaching and learning.

Learning languages at Whitchurch is fun!!!
