History/Politics and Communication Key Skill

All students studying History AS will be expected to achieve Level 3 Communication. This qualification has to be achieved by the end of the year.  It should not be too onerous a task and you will be told at regular intervals about when there are opportunities for you to achieve the various strands of the Key Skill. The advantages for you are that if you complete the tasks it will give you 20 points towards your UCAS application. You will be reminded (nagged) at regular intervals about completing this Key Skill.

In order to complete the Communication Key Skill you must show evidence of completing several tasks. You must also create a portfolio (print pages 5-7) of evidence showing that you have completed these tasks. Your teacher will have to mark your assignments and sign off forms which show that you have reached the required level.

 You must achieve the following:

1. Contribute to a group discussion about a complex subject.

  • make clear and relevant contributions in a way that suits your purpose and situation;

  • listen and respond sensitively to others, and develop points and ideas; and

  • create opportunities for others to contribute where appropriate

Here your teacher must see you discussing a topic in small groups (at least 4). It could be a discussion on a topic that has been set for you and will be relevant to the work you are studying. This is a normal History activity and will be easy to achieve. You should be able to provide evidence of notes taken for the discussion or during the discussion.

2. Make a presentation about a complex subject, using at least one image to illustrate complex points.

  • speak clearly and adapt your style of presentation to suit your purpose, subject, audience and situation;

  • structure what you say so that the sequence of information and ideas may be easily followed; and

  • use a range of techniques to engage the audience, including effective use of images

Here each one of you should make a presentation on a topic that you can choose from the courses we are studying. The presentation must last 8 minutes and must be delivered to the whole group. It would help to use images during the presentation. To pass this task your notes and images and a statement from your teacher will be needed for your portfolio.  A powerpoint presentation would lend itself well to this task. Presentations are an expectation in most University courses so this will be valuable experience.

3. Read and synthesise information from two extended documents about a complex subject. One of these documents should include at least one image.

  • select and read material that contains the information you need;

  • identify accurately, and compare, the lines of reasoning and main points from texts and images; and

  • synthesise the key information in a form that is relevant to your purpose.

Here you must provide evidence that you have read two documents on a complex subject (History? e.g. Two chapters from a textbook or two extended primary documents) So if you have photocopies of two documents that you have annotated then this will qualify as evidence of reading. This task will overlap with the next task where you have to have evidence of written work. This should be easy to achieve in our subject and you can use evidence from any of the units (ie British or German)

Child reading a book.

4. Write two different types of documents about complex subjects. One piece of writing should be an extended document and include at least one image.

  • select and use a form and style of writing that is appropriate to your purpose and complex subject matter;

  • organise relevant information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate;

  • ensure your text is legible and your spelling, grammar and punctuation are accurate, so your meaning is clear

Here you must produce two documents of 1000 words. Easy again because we use essays to assess you during the year. You could link up with the task above and show how you have synthesized your understanding of the documents with this written work. The documents have to be different types so you could use a source based assignment and a normal essay. You could use evidence from another subject for one of your written tasks (e.g. English coursework). Spelling, grammar, and punctuation have to be good for this task.

All these tasks are normal parts of the study of History and are not extras so this qualification should be easy to achieve. As a department we will support you in achieving the Communication Key Skill. You, however, must also take some responsibility for achieving this qualification. You must make sure that during the course of the year you are aware of what needs to be completed to get the Key Skill and you will have to take responsibiity for the completion of your portfolio of evidence.
