At a recent gathering of some of the best young scientists in South Wales, Rhys Bowley and Michael Draper, stood out with their presentation, on how electronic implants in the human body can use electromagnetic waves to convey information showing how well the organs of the body are working.

They had spent the summer working under the supervision of Steve Watts, a lecturer with the Engineering department of Cardiff University, on the project, which was funded by the Nuffield Foundation, which is trying to promote scientific research.

In an entertaining talk, Michael and Rhys explained how they had to produce imitation body fat from everyday substances, which was then tested for its electrical properties. Their presentation was an excellent mix of clarity and scientific procedure and was warmly received by their peers. Whilst highlighting the results that they had uncovered, they acknowledged that the project only scratched the surface of the topic, and it seems likely that the two of them will be returning to Cardiff University in the near future to continue their research.

The Nuffield project runs every summer and any students keen to take on scientific challenge should speak to Mr E Coombes or Mr J Crossan.
