After the success of last year Drama and Music decided to work together again on a project based on Africa.  The media coverage of Africa is usually one of misery and despair and it was felt that we wanted to produce something that showed Africa in a more positive light.  Also in recent years the school has forged links with Mr Yusef Abrahams (Head Teacher of Macassar High School, Cape Town) and Trevor Sampson (Restoring the Sounds Project, Cape Town) who are committed to improving the lives of young people and offering them an alternative to a life of crime and hopelessness.

This year the Drama students were extremely fortunate to work with Kevin Lewis and Carrie Munn from Theatre Iolo.  Theatre Iolo is Cardiff’s Theatre for Young People funded by the Arts Council for Wales and Cardiff Education Authority.  The students explored the hardships of life in a Township and in particular the attraction of ‘Gangsterism’. From this they devised a piece of drama centred on a main character Danny, a gang leader, who has a life changing experience which causes him to re-think his future.  The music students composed the soundtrack using a whole range of instruments many of which were loaned from Rob Cornelius.  The use of percussion, guitars and vocal sounds really captured the soul of the piece and helped to create a moving an atmospheric piece of theatre.
